The past week or two, I’ve been hard at work deciding which fabrics to use for my first attempt at a Judy Niemeyer quilt. I finally settled on using muted Americana fabrics. I ordered several fabrics from the Best of William Morris line from Moda. I’m not sure if I mentioned before but there are 16 pages of directions for this quilt to keep you very organized and straight. I’m doing my very best to follow along with them. You might remember that first I had to cut the paper pattern pieces out and put them into labeled baggies. Then the instructions have you cut strips of the fabrics and separate them into the correct bags. Then you go back and use the template papers to further cut those strips into shapes. I kept going back to read the instructions because usually when I paper piece, I just eyeball the pattern and cut off a big chunk of fabric. I suppose doing all this pre-cutting is a more conservative way of using the fabric. Also this way I know I’ll have enough. So now I’m all ready to start the piecing! And thanks to a 5am text message from my husband, I am getting a super early start! I hope to post photos of the quilt in progress tomorrow so wish me luck.
